Purpose of the position

The University of Campinas (UNICAMP) and the University of São Paulo (USP) are world-class academic and research institutions based in Latin America. Research groups from these institutions have gathered to discover new innovative drugs for the treatment of tropical parasitic diseases in close collaboration with two leading international drug discovery organizations – Medicines for Malaria Venture (MMV) and Drugs for Neglected Diseases initiative (DNDi) – both having a significant track record in discovering and developing novel drug treatments for neglected patients.

This MINDI consortium (https://mindi.iqm.unicamp.br/) is supported by the Research Support Partnership Program for Technological Innovation (PITE-FAPESP, 15/50655-9). The major goals of this multidisciplinary team are (1) the delivery of high-quality preclinical candidates for the treatment of malaria and Chagas disease, and (2) to build a world class academic drug discovery center for tropical diseases in Latin America.

Specific job responsibilities

The selected postdoctoral researchers will be responsible for the design of target molecules and synthetic routes, working on chemical series provided by MMV and DNDi, then conduct the synthesis in the laboratory.

Job requirements

7 (seven) highly qualified postdoctoral fellows with experience in organic synthesis and medicinal chemistry, to join the drug discovery consortium at UNICAMP, Campinas, São Paulo, under the supervision of Prof. Luiz Carlos Dias.

Successful candidates are expected to play a leading role within the drug discovery project and consult closely and regularly with other drug discovery scientists (e.g., medicinal chemistry, parasitology, DMPK, safety, formulation), contributing to the overall project team. These roles offer opportunities to work in close collaboration with leading drug discovery scientists in academia and industry.

Essential Requirements:

PhD or equivalent degree in chemistry, medicinal chemistry, organic synthesis, pharmacy. Candidates must have obtained the degree within the last 7 (seven) years.
Outstanding record of scientific achievements as evidenced by publications, patents
Demonstrated international experience and ability to work within multidisciplinary teams.
Effective communication skills in English, both written and spoken.

Desirable Requirements:

Previous hands-on Medicinal Chemistry and Drug Discovery experience in academic or industrial setting.

Fellowships start immediately and end on December 31, 2024 and are not renewable. The current tax-free monthly stipend is R$ 9.047,40, plus initial moving allowance following Fapesp rules. The vacancies are open to Brazilians and foreigners.

Postdoctoral Researcher in Drug Discovery – CLOSED

Purpose of the position

The Center for Research and Innovation in Biodiversity and Drug Discovery (CIBFar), located at the Sao Carlos Institute of Physics of the University of Sao Paulo (USP), offers one (1) opportunity for a Postdoctoral researcher, with a FAPESP grant for up to 24 months.

The Research group from CIBFar has gathered to discover new innovative drugs for the treatment of tropical parasitic diseases in close collaboration with the leading international drug discovery organization – Drugs for Neglected Diseases initiative (DNDi) – which has a significant track record in discovering and developing novel drug treatments for neglected patients. The researcher will be part of a multidisciplinary group of researchers in collaboration with DNDi, focusing on the discovery and optimization of new chemical entities for the treatment of leishmaniasis and Chagas disease.

Specific job responsibilities

Successful candidates are expected to play a leading role within the drug discovery project and liaise closely with other drug discovery scientists (medicinal chemistry, parasitology, DMPK, safety, formulation), contributing to the overall project team. The selected postdoctoral researcher will be responsible for data generation and analysis within an international and multicentric drug discovery project. Activities are focused on the planning and execution of (i) in vitro phenotypic assays against Trypanosoma cruzi and Leishmania, and (ii) in vitro pharmacokinetics and metabolism studies (solubility, permeability, organic phase/water partitioning, and metabolic stability).

Financial support for travel and installation expenses may be requested for the selected applicant who lives out of Sao Paulo and the merit will be evaluated by FAPESP upon acceptance of the fellowship. São Paulo Research Foundation (FAPESP) Partnership for Technological Innovation Program (PITE) supports research projects in academic or research institutions developed in cooperation with researchers employed by companies in research centers located in Brazil or abroad and is co-funded by the companies concerned. The main aim of the program is to strengthen relationships between universities or research institutions and companies by facilitating cooperative co-funded research projects.
